Olympics: Day 2

11 August, 2008 | 17:08

Jamie and Andy have safely progressed from the first round of the doubles event in Beijing after a 4-6 6-3 6-4 win against Canada's Daniel Nestor and Frederic Niemeyer.

It followed the disappointment of Andy's first round singles exit against Lu Yen-Hsun of Chinese Taipei.

The guys will now play the winner of Clement/Llodra (FRA) vs. Erlich/Ram (ISR).

Match Report

Given the circumstances coming into the match, this was a great win on what would have been a long, and emotional day for both guys; Andy in particular.

An understandably sluggish start saw the guys concede a tight first set 4-6 after Andy double faulted when serving at 4-5.

But having created two break points on the Niemeyer serve earlier, the guys bounced back strongly as a return winner from Andy gave them the 1-0 lead at the start of the second.

Clearly the weak link in the Canadian team, Niemeyer had Nestor to thank for getting them back on terms, the world No. 1 hitting a winning return on Andy's serve for the break, and 2-2.

But with Andy beginning to find his feet and Jamie lively at the net, Niemeyer's serve was picked to pieces twice more, allowing the guys to take the set comfortably, 6-3.

It was Nestor who handed them the advantage first in the decider, as his normally reliable serve went AWOL. Offering up three break points, he double faulted to put Andy and Jamie 3-1 up.

There was a slight wobble as Jamie served for the match at 5-3, his error handing back the break, but once again Niemeyer handed the advantage straight back with a break on his own serve.
